Benefits of new school buildings?!

Our school community is currently investigating the impact of school design on changing pedagogy, improving student outcomes and strengthening collegiality and distributed leadership.

We have focused on the question "What are the building design features that will positively impact on the learning and teaching within our primary school?" and invite you to join us in our discussions.

Students, staff and parents are involved in school visits, forums and meetings and have worked together to complete the the first three stages of the Building Futures progam which is now a requirement for Victorian government schools. We hope to commence work on the Master Plan shortly and begin building early 2008 (if not before).

We look forward to hearing from you with your ideas on the 'must haves' and 'best to avoid' features.

I'm really looking forward to moving into a new office. I would like to see an ergonomically designed uncluttered office which makes use of natural light whilst still being computer monitor friendly (ie: no glare).

I would also like a withdrawal area (to the back of the office) which is away from the main office customer service area, which allows continuous work productivity without the interruptions from people who just enjoy chatting.

I am really looking forward to the building of our new school, but alas am not looking forward to the chaos that will come through the process (I work best in an orderly environment!)

In recent weeks I have made contact with a number of schools across the state that have been involved in building projects during the last few years.

Principals, teachers and administration staff have been extremely helpful and supportive. Thank you very much for your time, information, photos and collegial support.

(This post is almost identical to my original one - I'm learning how blogs work and have discovered that when you bin a post its history remains.)

Looking at the blogs I can see that the entry times are incorrect...not sure how to change that.

To create an inside/outside learning space is it best to use glass doors that
a) slide open or
b) open upwards, like a garage?

Please tell us your preference and why.
Thanks, Barb.

After months of negotiation Expressions of Interest for the building of the new school will be advertised commencing September 17 in the Herald/Sun and local papers. This is a very exciting time for Toora Primary School.

The finalised plans have incorporated many features that aim to support the learning of students and collegiality. Daniel Haskell and Alison McKenzie, from Haskell Architects http://www.haskell.com.au
have worked closely with the school community; taking on board suggestions and innovations that staff and School Council have put forward on behalf of students, parents, teachers and school support officers.

We are now involved in working through
a) grounds and garden design
b) the importance of colour and texture to our buildings.

Your input is invited.

Will there be a canteen in the new school and if there will be one what kind of food will be in it? I would like it if we had bright coloured tables. I would personally like it if the tables would be flourescent colours, I would like flouro green.

At our new school would we be allowed to use laptops instead of using desktop computers? We could sell some raffle tickets to raise some money for the laptops.I think that our new school sounds awesome and will be.

I hope we have a bigger library with more and better books because we don't have many books and I think the library would be a lot better to use if it was bigger.
