Benefits of new school buildings?!

Despite a number of hiccups along the way we are in, or almost in, the new school building. There are a few finishing touches to be done and a little more organisation needed but we will be well ready for our students on the 1st Feb. The grounds are taking longer than antcipated but it's great to see the concrete going into the indoor/outdoor areas which will be well used in the coming weeks. It's a very exciting time. Once students and staff are established in the new building we will have ClassFocus come through and do a Virtual Tour that will become part of our website. We look forward to sharing our new school with you in the near future. It was quite sad walking through the bare rooms and corridors of our old school that has served the community here for almost thirty years - even though we have had ongoing problems with the school of relocatables (roof leaks, faulty plumbing, gas leaks, electrical / ICT breakdowns etc etc) we created a vibrant learning environment and have achieved excellent results. The relocatables are fenced off and ready for removal. We look forward to an even brighter future in our new purpose built school!

Please let us know what you think about your new school by adding to this blog. Put up suggestions and ideas about what furniture and equipment you would like and start designing the grounds and 5 star henhouse. Read each others comments and keep adding.

The Toora Primary School community is currently witnessing the building of their new school! Considine and Johnston, the builders, are completing the frame this week. Haskell Architects are overseeing the project.

Our school community is currently investigating the impact of school design on changing pedagogy, improving student outcomes and strengthening collegiality and distributed leadership.

We have focused on the question "What are the building design features that will positively impact on the learning and teaching within our primary school?" and invite you to join us in our discussions.

Students, staff and parents are involved in school visits, forums and meetings and have worked together to complete the the first three stages of the Building Futures progam which is now a requirement for Victorian government schools. We hope to commence work on the Master Plan shortly and begin building early 2008 (if not before).

We look forward to hearing from you with your ideas on the 'must haves' and 'best to avoid' features.
